“I hate running.”
This may be one of the most common sentences in the English language today. And, while running is one of the most loathed forms of cardio (behind burpees, of course), running races is one of the most feared forms of competition.
We have decided to take the initiative to break this stereotype and show that running can be fun and accessible to everyone. Our solution? Fun runs. We have scoured the internet for the most exciting running races in the Los Angeles area. From mud runs to bubble runs, we’ve got the facts. All you have to do is sign up!
Don’t live in LA? Don’t worry. Most of these races are traveling and might come to your area sooner than you think!
Bubble Run Anaheim – March 25th
The Bubble Run is open to kids and kids at heart! This race gives you plenty of opportunities to get showered in bubbles of every color during the 3-mile route. Sign up if having fun is your end goal – there is no time clock or placement recognition. However, it is an awesome opportunity to cool off in the LA heat and do something active with friends and family!
Where: Anaheim, CA
Can’t make it? There will be another Bubble Run in Pomona on May 13th.
Tough Mudder – March 25th & 26th
Competition addicts, unite! Tough Mudder is notorious for being one of the muddiest, “toughest” events around today. This race is not for the faint of heart. It is 10-12 miles long and contains 20+ grueling obstacles that your team must conquer in order to finish. Even though Tough Mudder is competitive, they emphasize teamwork and pushing yourself rather than winning. There are no podiums, winners, or clocks, just good old-fashioned mud and perseverance.
Where: San Bernardino, CA (about an hour drive from LA)
Online registration closes on March 24th.
Night Nation Run – April 8th
Who doesn’t like a good party? Night Nation Run boasts being the only ‘running music festival’ in existence. It has all the same qualities of your favorite EDM show (live music, lights, lasers) but you also get in a great workout at the same time. Your run culminates at the main stage for a huge dance party (extra cardio, right?).
Where: Orange County, CA
Can’t make it? There is another one in Anaheim on the 29th.
Santa Anita Derby Day – April 8th
Ever wonder what it’s like to be one of the horses in the Kentucky Derby? Now you can find out! The Santa Anita Derby Day 5k is a great change of scenery since you will be racing right on the track, just like the horses. The post-event expo features plenty of entertainment as well as – you guessed it – horse racing.
Where: Arcadia, CA
Last day to register is April 5th.
Color Fun Fest 5k – April 29th
Color Fun Fest is for those who don’t mind getting a little bit colorful – literally. This race is unique because you have two options – you can sign up for a day run or night run, whatever floats your boat. The course is 1.6 miles long and has two stations shooting out copious amounts of color. Once the race is over, be sure to take advantage of the carnival attractions at the post-race party!
Where: Irwindale, CA
Foam Glow Run – May 6th
The Foam Glow Run is basically what would happen if the Bubble Run and the Night Nation Run had a baby. It is the best of both worlds: you get covered in neon colored bubbles AND you run through blacklights. Much like Night Nation Run, the 5k ends with an after party that has all the lasers and dance music you could ever possibly need.
Where: Pomona, CA
Be forewarned, the cost is projected to increase as the event date nears!
Tacos & Beer 5k – May 6th
Who doesn’t like a good taco or glass of (if you are of age, of course) beer? Celebrate the Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend by getting in a good workout and then indulging yourself with some of the best Mexican food around – you earned it! This is also the perfect opportunity to find out what it would be like to run a 5k in a sombrero.
Location: Long Beach, CA
Ultimate Wine Run & Fun – August 5th
Beer and tacos not your thing? The Ultimate Wine Run & Fun provides the best incentive out there: you get to wine taste after you run! The wine is only half the fun – there is plenty of food and dancing planned for the after-race party. Wine not sign up?
Location: Griffith Park, Los Angeles, CA
Miss the online registration? Don’t worry, they offer same day registration on race day.
The Color Run – October 7th
Can’t make the Color Fun Fest? No worries, the Color Run has your back. The Color Run boasts being the “happiest 5k on the planet” and, much like the other events, they emphasize having fun over getting a PR! The Color Run has recently added a new color (purple) to the mix and their 2017 tour is titled the Dream World Tour. It is rumored they have added a community dream wall to the course to give runners a chance to express their dreams and aspirations.
Location: Huntington Beach, CA
Cost: At least $29.99 (depending on time of purchase)
Can’t make it? There is another one in Ventura on November 18th!
Turkey Trot LA – November 23rd
Thanksgiving Day is traditionally a day for indulgence and – possible – overeating, followed by regret the next day. Want to break that endless cycle? Sign your family and friends up for the Turkey Trot LA! Not only will you get the enjoyment of seeing multiple people running in Thanksgiving-themed costumes, you will also burn a few extra calories before going to town on that turkey – or tofurkey.
Location: Downtown Los Angeles
Cost: TBD – Registration opens June 1st
Santa Claus for a Cause – December 16th
Nothing gets us in the holiday spirit more than running in a Santa costume. Don your favorite ugly holiday sweater and turn up the merriment because this race is meant to get you excited for the happiest season of the year! Don’t live in the area? The race organizers are offering a virtual run opportunity! You have no excuse to get active and excited for the holidays.
