New science has shown that it takes an average time of 66 days to make a new habit stick. This contradicts the widespread notion that it only takes 21 days to form a habit. This misinformation started with cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Maxwell Maltz, who noticed that it took his patients an average of 21 days to get used to seeing their surgically altered face or stop sensing a phantom limb after an amputation. He quickly shortened his findings to claim that it took 21 days to form a habit, and since the ’60s, this has been the status quo.
But in 2009, health psychology researcher Dr. Phillippa Lally and her team challenged this decades-old notion with a new study. Their findings showed a very wide range of times, varying from person to person. The subjects in their study took anywhere from 18 to 254 days to form a new habit. But notably, Dr. Lally’s team found that the average time it took for new habits to form and stick was none other than 66 Days.
Weren’t aware of this study when we started 66 Audio, but clearly there was a bit of serendipity at play here. We’re all creatures of habit; habits that are created not born. Habits that are also very tough to break. So why not make an active and healthy lifestyle a habit, instead of a struggle?
